Wireless AP with shared key authentication
Observer has sensed an AP using shared key authentication, in which the station and AP exchange WEP-encrypted keys before the station is allowed to associate with the AP. Compare to open system authentication.
Although shared key authentication offers a higher level of security than open system, the inherent weaknesses of WEP encryption mean the keys are still vulnerable to widely available hacking tools.
